INSIGHT
TOWARDS A MORE RESILIENT OF THE PHILIPPINES
The word
"resilience" or "katatagan" denotes the "image of the
Filipino people" in times of misfortune. Traditional and social media
frequently portray us as a group of individuals smiling in the face of
adversity. It promotes a national image of a powerful nation—one that responds
fast with a joke and a grin as a weapon. Seeing this somehow boosts the mood
and gives optimism that life is returning to normalcy or will return to
normalcy soon.
However, its
"resilience" has been a source of contention. People often dismiss
adversity as something we must deal with on a daily basis. Because we are
"resilient," we frequently dismiss hazards in the face of another
incident and would perform the same thing "again and over." If you
complain about the difficulties, others will frequently perceive you as
negative and pessimistic, which will not assist to elevate the spirit and
society required in these difficult times. The picture of "resiliency"
being played again and over appears to verge on "insanity" - doing
the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. It also has a
touch of fatalism—"wala na tayong magagawa." "We should deal
with it," he says, despite the fact that he is no longer among the
delubyos.
